The primary task of bombers is to take out enemy goliaths before your troops land on the planet. Bombers do not carry any defensive weapons and therefore have to rely on other crafts such as fighters and carriers to protect them against enemy fighters who will use any opportunely available to turn your brand new sparkling bomber into an expensive pile of orbital debris. Bombers are most vulnerable in the first 3 stages of combat. In the first 2 stages bombers are still inside carriers which transported them to the scene of the battle, and if the carrier gets destroyed, then all the vessel within that carrier go down with it. In the 3rd stage bombers are out in the open and will be haunted by enemy fighters as well as launched upon by any goliath that is at the planets surface, considering of course that the goliath lives long enough to launch anything.
